PMP in 2026: Current Version, Eligibility, Format and Boundaries
7 min read
Lesson objectives
- Calculate non-overlapping experience months and compare them with the documented education route without granting eligibility.
- Distinguish training, CAPM and a future rule from current experience requirements.
- Interpret examination format, timing and platform-mock limits without assuming an official passing percentage.
Four separate decisions: learning, eligibility, application and certification
The reference checked for this lesson on 19 September 2026 is the 2026 PMP Examination Content Outline, revised on 11 August 2026. PMI awards the external credential; this program teaches preparation and does not grant final eligibility or PMP. Use the outline to identify what the examination assesses and the official certification page to check application requirements. A book edition or article date alone does not establish examination rules. Keep three categories separate: a published requirement is a dated fact, a candidate’s calculated gap is an inference, and the cases below are fictional exercises rather than actual applications.
Start with three evidence folders: recognized educational level, experience leading projects in a professional setting, and specific project-management training. Long experience does not establish an undocumented qualification, and answering practice questions does not automatically establish documented training. The table uses non-overlapping months within the ten years before application, not the sum of every project’s duration. An equivalent qualification level requires formal evidence; an impressive translation of the award’s name does not establish equivalence.
| Documented education route | Minimum leadership months |
|---|---|
| Secondary education or equivalent at the ECO-specified level | 60 months |
| Recognized EQF 5 / ISCED 5 qualification or equivalent | 48 months |
| Recognized bachelor’s or higher degree, or a formally mapped qualification at the required equivalent level | 36 months |
| Bachelor’s or postgraduate degree from a GAC-accredited program | 24 months |
To calculate experience, mark the months in which the person led qualifying projects, merge overlapping intervals and count covered months once. For two intervals, unique months equal the first duration plus the second minus their overlap. More projects do not multiply elapsed time. Check the work as well: routine operations do not become project leadership merely because someone has a managerial title. Our examples assume complete calendar months, qualifying professional leadership and dates inside the eligibility window. These assumptions would need evidence in a real application.
Training is a separate requirement: the published minimum is 35 hours of specific project-management instruction. Qualifying self-paced learning includes an end-of-course assessment and remains subject to PMI review; books and practice tests alone are insufficient. An active CAPM holder who meets education and experience conditions receives the ECO’s training-hour documentation waiver, not an experience waiver. This program does not claim that reading-time estimates or completed questions establish qualifying hours; its official hours are unset. List missing evidence rather than substituting a study estimate on an internal completion record.
Separate current requirements from announced future changes. PMI announced live instructor-led provider restrictions effective on 1 December 2026, after this lesson’s review date rather than already in force in September. Self-paced learning continues under its published conditions. Before application, recheck effective dates, training modality and the official source; do not automatically transfer a live-training restriction to self-paced learning. Examination fees and platform credential prices are not fixed here because they do not determine this learning task.
| Official examination element | Inspected reference information |
|---|---|
| Domains | People 33%; Process 41%; Business Environment 26% |
| Questions and time | 180 questions; 240 answer minutes; 170 scored and 10 unscored pretest items |
| Approaches | Approximately 40% predictive; the remainder adaptive/agile and hybrid without separately fixed shares |
| Breaks | Two ten-minute breaks; no return to the previous section after starting a break, subject to delivery-mode instructions |
Understanding the format is not reproducing the interface. The examination description includes single and multiple responses, matching, cases and data interpretation; the item instructions determine the response. This program’s planned 180-item mock scores every item internally and allows free navigation. It does not claim official section locks or all official interactive formats, nor does it enforce an approach percentage unsupported by its sampler. Use results to identify topics for relearning, not to calculate a probability of passing PMP.
Lesson summary
Eligibility combines documented education, non-overlapping experience and qualifying training. A gap calculation is not PMI approval, and a mock result is not an official pass.
