BATNA and reservation threshold

Lesson objectives
Identify and verify the best feasible outside option.
Calculate package cost and distinguish a reservation limit from authorization.
Revise the decision when an alternative expires or delivery changes.
When you bargain without a clear outside option, any price reduction can feel like a victory, even if the result is worse than an available offer. Your best alternative to a negotiated agreement, or BATNA, is the best action you can take if no deal is reached with the current counterpart. It is not a wish or a threat you hope will frighten them. List realistic alternatives, then verify price, terms, expiry and who can authorize each one. You do not automatically reveal your alternative or reservation limit. Its purpose is to help you choose with a workable exit plan, not to perform confidence.
Compare options on the same basis. If one print quote includes delivery and another does not, add the second quote's delivery charge before comparing them. Different delivery dates or quality also matter; price alone cannot settle the decision. A reservation limit is the least favorable package that is still preferable to a feasible alternative and remains within your own constraints. In a purchase of identical goods, it can be expressed as a cost ceiling. With several issues, you need a comparison table, because a low price with late delivery may be inferior to a higher price with a usable date.
Keep an aspiration separate from a limit. You may aim for 920 to leave room for discussion, while 1000 is an acceptance ceiling derived from B's offer, not the figure you need to open with. Recalculate if the outside option improves or disappears. If B confirms a reduction in file preparation to 20, its total becomes 980, so A's 990 needs reassessment. If B's quote expires, it cannot remain a confirmed alternative in your calculation. Label what is verified, what is conditional and what still needs investigation.
Lesson summary
Derive a reservation limit from a feasible comparable alternative, including all costs and terms, and recalculate when that alternative changes.
