Threat modeling, supply chain and awareness

Lesson objectives
- Draw trust boundaries and assess device provenance, updates and supplier dependencies.
Threat modeling begins by drawing what must be protected and what crosses trust boundaries. Identify external actors, processes, data stores, flows and boundaries, then ask at each crossing: who can claim an identity, alter a message, obtain more data than needed or leave no attributable record? A useful model differs from a static component inventory because it shows direction of data and changes of privilege. Test a threat hypothesis by following a concrete path from entry point to sensitive asset. Choose controls that break that path and document residual risks and exclusions.
Procurement risk extends beyond today's vendor breach. A counterfeit component, untrusted update, outdated dependency, overprivileged support account or sole-source outage can enter the system. Determine product criticality before demanding the same costly evidence from every supplier. For a service handling sensitive data, seek update design and package-signature verification, a suitable software bill of materials, vulnerability handling, notification conditions and recovery-test evidence. An SBOM describes disclosed components; by itself it cannot prove there are no hidden components or vulnerabilities. Examine evidence scope and date, test in the buyer's environment and plan an alternative if the supplier fails. Define service and security duties before treating a general certificate as assurance.
Awareness programs should change measurable behavior rather than maximize page opens. If the risk is fraudulent bank-account changes, teach staff to use an independent confirmation channel and measure the proportion of simulated requests correctly stopped and escalated. Do not shame individuals who err; examine workload and whether the procedure actually permits verification. Reports may rise after good training, which does not necessarily mean attacks increased. Interpret metrics in context, update material for emerging techniques and test the decision people make on the job. Link training to policies, roles and functioning reporting channels.
Lesson summary
Revisit the decisive distinction in the worked case, then solve the practice and explain why a plausible alternative fails.
