Set statement boundaries before comparing

Lesson objectives

  • Identify the reporting perimeter, period, currency, accounting basis and statement components before comparing numbers

Financial comparison begins by defining what each number represents, before dividing one number by another. Record the entity, whether the statements are consolidated or separate, the period end, the length of each performance period, the presentation currency, display scale, reporting basis, audit status and version date. A statement of financial position is a snapshot at a date; income and cash flow statements cover intervals. Inventory at 31 December divided by one month's revenue is not an annual turnover measure. Likewise, a revenue growth rate between a twelve-month column and a nine-month column is not an interpretable year-on-year result.

Inventory the complete statement set first. Under IFRS, the set includes financial position, profit or loss and other comprehensive income, changes in equity, cash flows and notes, with comparative amounts. The notes are analytical evidence: they explain the consolidation perimeter, policies, judgments and detail not visible on the face of a statement. An item absent from the primary page is not necessarily absent from the business. If the available material is only a press-release extract, label the pack incomplete and do not issue a firm conclusion about liquidity or earnings quality from that extract.

Create a provenance card for every column before it enters the analysis sheet: source document, page or note, entity scope, period start, period end, presentation currency, scale, reporting basis and audit status. Scale must say whether figures are units, thousands or millions. Convert to a common unit before calculating a ratio or sum. Keep the original reported value beside the conversion so that a reviewer can trace an error. Check that assets equal liabilities plus equity for each column. Then reconcile closing cash in the cash flow statement to the position statement, investigating classification or foreign-currency differences rather than forcing an unexplained plug.

Test comparability in four layers. First, time: like dates for positions and equal-length performance periods, with seasonality considered. Second, perimeter: did an acquisition or disposal change the consolidated group? Third, measurement and display: did an accounting policy or line-item reclassification change? Fourth, currency and scale: is conversion from one currency or display unit documented? Return one of three outcomes for each layer: comparable, comparable after a documented adjustment, or unsupported by available evidence. Similar captions do not prove similar content. The IFRS Conceptual Framework explains that consistency helps comparability but cannot make unlike things alike.

If perimeter or period changes, do not turn the raw percentage into an operating fact. State instead that the reported change spans unlike bases and requires a like-for-like series before performance can be interpreted. A disclosed restatement or continuing-operations series may permit a documented adjustment; record its formula, note location and residual limitation. Do not invent an estimate merely to make the series complete. For an urgent decision, you may show the raw reported arithmetic as a description of published data, provided you explicitly explain why it is not organic growth.

The order of checks matters. You can correct thousands versus millions mechanically when the page heading establishes the scale. You can align twelve months with twelve months when complete periods exist. You cannot repair an acquired subsidiary's contribution from a single annual revenue total. The specialist documents the gap, requests the pertinent disclosure, and escalates a conclusion that could affect credit or investment decisions to the responsible reviewer. Do not assume that every current IFRS statement uses the same new operating subtotals: IFRS 18 becomes effective for annual periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027, and earlier application is permitted. Record the reporting year and applied standard before equating similarly named operating profit lines.
