Connect statements through equity movements

Lesson objectives

  • Reconcile balance sheet, profit, comprehensive income and equity movements

Statements give different views of the same events. First verify the position equation: assets equal liabilities plus equity. Then build a separate bridge: closing equity equals opening equity plus profit or loss plus other comprehensive income plus owner contributions less distributions, adjusted for other movements supported in the notes. Do not combine a parent-owner profit figure with total equity that includes non-controlling interests. Mixing those scopes manufactures a discrepancy.

Accrual profit is not cash flow. Issuing shares raises equity without creating revenue; a distribution lowers equity without being an operating expense. Declaration and payment of a dividend may occur on different dates. Do not substitute the cash payment for the equity movement merely because both carry the dividend label. Keep separate columns for the movement, recognition date and cash date, and attach each amount to its reported location. The statement of changes in equity and its notes support the bridge; subtracting two balances alone does not explain it.

Start diagnosing a bridge gap with signs, units and period. Then inspect any opening restatement, change in consolidation perimeter or other comprehensive income reserve. Show reported closing equity, calculated equity and difference in separate cells; never overwrite a source value to conceal a gap. A small difference can result from rounding to the nearest million, but a documented tolerance is needed. A large or recurring difference requires a note-based explanation or escalation to the responsible reviewer. A balanced position statement does not establish that every item is correctly classified.

After the equity bridge, link closing cash in the cash flow statement to opening cash and net movement, allowing for any foreign-currency effect presented. This is a distinct check: the equity bridge explains the owners' claim, while the cash bridge explains the cash balance. Neither substitutes for the other. High profit with weak operating cash raises a question about working capital or noncash items; inspect the cash flow reconciliation rather than declaring either profit invalid or cash the sole measure of performance.

The professional output is a reproducible bridge sheet. Each row identifies a reported or derived value, page source, unit, formula and sign. Calculate difference as reported closing equity less computed closing equity. If it remains unexplained, record its size, its proportion of equity and the next evidence request. Use an other line only when its name and amount are actually disclosed. The method turns a discrepancy into a testable question rather than an allegation or artificial plug.
