Vision, Mission, and Strategic Objectives

Lesson objectives
Distinguish vision, mission, and strategic objectives from strategy itself.
Separate outcome, indicator, and initiative when formulating objectives.
Formulate an aligned set of vision, mission, objective, and strategy statement.
Vision, mission, and objectives guide strategy — but are not the whole strategy
Vision describes a desired future state or broad direction. Mission is more specific about what the organization does, for whom, and why it exists. Strategic objectives translate direction into priority results that can be monitored. These elements support alignment, but they do not remove the need for choice. Two organizations can have similar vision and mission statements while adopting very different strategies in whom they serve, how activities are configured, and what trade-offs they make.
Element
Function
Quick test
Vision
Desired future direction or state
Does it describe where we want to go without pretending to be the plan?
Mission
Purpose, what the organization does, and for whom
Does it clarify why the organization exists and its core work?
Strategic objective
A priority result to achieve
Can progress or the resulting state be assessed?
Strategy
Choices, trade-offs, and an activity system
Does it explain how distinctive value will be created?
When writing a strategic objective, separate the outcome, the indicator, and the initiative. 'Launch a new app' is an initiative; 'increase customer retention' is an intended outcome; 'percentage of customers renewing within 12 months' is a possible indicator. One outcome may need more than one indicator. This distinction prevents the team from treating project completion as automatic evidence that strategic impact occurred.
Lesson summary
Vision, mission, and objectives clarify direction, purpose, and priority results, but they do not replace strategic choices and trade-offs. A useful objective separates the outcome from its indicator and initiatives and provides a clear review point.
