Short Diploma in Business Data Analytics

Short Diploma in Business Data Analytics is a free program on ARPS, the Arab Platform for Professional Studies. A foundational short diploma that teaches how to turn a practical question into structured business data analysis: define metrics, check data quality, describe and compare, understand samples and correlation, design charts and dashboards, and communicate results without claiming more than the evidence.

About the program

The program focuses on the complete business data analytics journey rather than one software tool. It starts by defining the decision question and understanding data sources and grain, then shows how to define metrics, prepare data, and calculate descriptive indicators and comparisons. It then introduces sample representation and uncertainty, correlation and its limits, chart selection, dashboard reasoning and quality checks, and finally the interpretation and communication of results. Cases are country-neutral, tools are replaceable examples, and every numerical teaching dataset must be clearly synthetic or documented with a source.

Practical relevance

Learners practise questions that resemble everyday work: What is the right metric? Did performance change or did the denominator change? Is the comparison fair? Does the sample represent the intended population? Does a correlation justify action? Does the dashboard support a user decision or merely look polished?

Why this program

A calculation can be correct while the decision is still weak if the question is vague, the denominator is inappropriate, the sample is biased or the visualization hides important context. The program therefore builds analytical habits before, during and after calculation: frame the question and metric, check the data, compare fairly, interpret relationships cautiously, and present the result with its limits. These habits transfer across industries and tools.

Career relevance

This foundation is useful in roles that work with reports, KPIs, business operations, sales, marketing, finance, HR, products and other data-informed activities, without assuming one job title or promising employment.

What you will learn

  • Frame an analytical question around a practical decision and identify the data needed.
  • Understand data structure, define metrics, assess quality and document cleaning.
  • Use descriptive statistics, proportions, rates and comparisons correctly.
  • Check samples, bias and uncertainty before generalizing results.
  • Interpret scatter plots and correlation without confusing association with causation.
  • Choose charts and dashboards that serve the question, audience and context.
  • Communicate findings, limitations and uncertainty for decision-makers.
  • Carry out a traceable analytical workflow from question to decision.
Learning outcomes (10)
  1. Translate a business need into a bounded analytical question that clarifies the decision and relevant data scope.
  2. Identify data sources, the unit of observation and data grain; assess quality issues and document cleaning steps without hiding their effects.
  3. Define metrics and KPIs with the required elements, including numerator, denominator, time period, segment and comparison basis when relevant.
  4. Calculate and interpret core descriptive measures, proportions, rates and changes while preserving correct units and denominators.
  5. Make fair comparisons across periods or groups and use exploratory analysis to detect patterns, outliers and areas requiring further checking.
  6. Assess how well a sample represents its population and distinguish sampling variability from bias that a larger sample alone does not remove.
  7. Interpret scatter plots and correlation while stating inferential limits and avoiding causal claims from correlation or statistical significance alone.
  8. Select and design charts and dashboards suited to the question and audience while showing relevant context, units, data freshness and limitations.
  9. Produce analytical interpretation and communication that separates observed evidence from inference and presents uncertainty and limitations for the intended audience.
  10. Build a traceable analytical workflow from business question to evidence-supported decision, documenting assumptions and what could change the conclusion.

Strengths

  • A connected question-to-decision workflow instead of isolated software lessons.
  • Metric definition and data quality come before calculation and visualization, reducing decisions based on non-comparable numbers.
  • Explicit teaching of sampling limits, correlation, causation and alternative explanations.
  • Dashboards are taught as decision-support products rather than visual ends in themselves.
  • Tool-neutral examples with a rule that synthetic data are labelled and real data are sourced.

Evidence basis

The design draws on the IIBA business data analytics framework and official guidance on data quality, analysis, visualization and communication from bodies including NIST, BLS, CDC and the UK Government Analysis Function. These sources ground specific concepts and limits; they do not imply endorsement or copied source content.

Methodology

A progressive foundational design connecting the business question to data and metrics, then description and comparison, sampling and relationships, visualization and communication. Official and professional sources ground concepts and limits, while examples, exercises and questions are original and country-neutral.

How the route works

Short Diplomas are relatively comprehensive learning pathways that cover a major subject through five connected learning subjects and structured assessments, with a diploma transcript available with the credential.

Self-paced sequential study. Content unlocks progressively and each subject combines reading, examples, exercises, knowledge checks, and assessment.

  • Build integrated knowledge in a major subject.
  • Study through five clear, connected learning subjects.
  • Complete a defined assessment for each subject.
  • Receive a diploma transcript showing subjects and results when the credential is issued.

Assessment

Each Short Diploma contains five subjects, each with an approved assessment. A sixth final exam is not required when the five assessments adequately cover the learning outcomes.

Assessment attempts: 2 per assessment, 7 days apart

The pass mark is announced before the program is published.

Certificate

Successful completion makes the learner eligible for the Short Diploma certificate and Diploma Transcript under the credential policy.

Program questions

Do I need previous analytics or statistics experience?

No advanced experience is required. The program begins with the business question, data structure and metric definitions, then builds descriptive analysis, comparison, relationships and communication progressively. Basic comfort with tables and numbers is useful but advanced professional experience is not required.

Does the program require Excel, Power BI or a paid tool?

No. The curriculum is tool-agnostic and focuses on analytical reasoning that can be applied in spreadsheets, business-intelligence tools or suitable analytical languages. Any later tool example is replaceable rather than a program requirement.

Is this an advanced statistics program?

No. It teaches the descriptive, comparative, sampling, uncertainty and correlation concepts needed for foundational business analytics without turning the short diploma into an advanced mathematical inference course.

Will I learn about dashboards?

You will learn chart selection and dashboard reasoning around user needs and decisions, including checks for metric definitions, filters, data freshness and limitations. The learning is not tied to one software product.

How does the program treat correlation and causation?

You learn to read relationships and correlations while checking form and outliers, then distinguish association from causal evidence and consider bias, confounding and alternative explanations before supporting a decision.

Are the datasets real?

Every numerical teaching dataset will be clearly labelled as synthetic for learning, or documented with a source when real data are used. Fictional numbers will not be presented as real market or organizational data.

Does the certificate provide a professional licence or endorsement?

No. It is a training-completion credential under the platform policies, not a university degree, professional licence, accreditation or endorsement by IIBA, NIST, CDC or any cited source.

Can I apply the exercises to my workplace?

Yes. You can adapt exercises to your own context or use the supplied fictional case. The program does not require confidential or personal data; safe or synthetic data are sufficient for practice.
